Press Release
The Southeast Federation of Stamp Clubs, sponsors of the Southeastern Stamp Show, an APS accredited World Series of Philately event, today announces the cancellation of their September 2009 show, and the request of a bye from the APS to remain a WSP show for 2010 and beyond.
The SEFSC has had to act to address the competition from other shows on the weekend of September 25th to 27th, 2009, a weekend that was originally designated for the Southeastern show because it did not conflict with other national stamp shows. Since that time, the Milcopex show has received permission to be held on that same weekend, and the New York Federation of Stamp Clubs has announced that a show called StampExpo 400 will also take place. StampExpo 400 commits to over 300 exhibition frames and 150 dealers.
After assessing the impact of these shows, the organizing committee of the SESS does not believe that they will be able to attract sufficient dealers to the show such that the SESS 2009 show can break even.
“We feel very challenged that the number of dealers, exhibitors and attendees needed to assure the show’s success will simply not be available,” said John Coles, President of the Southeast Federation of Stamp Clubs. “I have an obligation to protect the long term interests of our show, and incurring what appears to be significant losses in 2009 does not lend itself to that end goal.”
Coles pointed out that the fundamentals of the Southeastern Stamp Show are strong. According to Coles, the SESS has been profitable for four straight years, and the sponsoring federation has over $10,000 in cash reserves. Coles also highlighted the success of the show’s exhibition, where in 2008, 104 of the show’s 125 minimum competitive frame quota came from exhibitors in Georgia and surrounding states.
“Our organizing committee remains both positive and committed, despite these circumstances. And as for our dealers, we fully understand that several of them will opt for what they deem a more compelling opportunity at StampExpo 400. We wish them luck, and we will welcome them back in 2010.” Coles expressed gratitude to all the supporters of the show over the years, some of whom have been regular participants since the early 1990’s.
The SESS’s formal request for a bye has been submitted to the APS. The show’s 2010 dates currently stand as Friday through Sunday, September 24th to 26th, 2010.
