Item of the Month

Steamboat cover with the vessel-named marking "STR. KATIE" dated 3 August 1880. The cover is addressed to Hudson's Ferry, Georgia. This was probably a stop on the route of the steamer as there is no record of Hudson's Ferry being a post office at this time. Only two vessel named steam boat markings are known from Georgia. Both markings are for the same vessel, the Steamer "Katie" that operated out of Savannah. The only period of use of the marking on the cover illustrated above is 1880. The second marking, distinguished by a saw-tooth oval marking, is only know from the year 1887.
